Research

So the first person I shall be researching will be Lewis Hine.
Lewis Hine was an american photographer and sociologist. He was instrumental in social reform in the United States, in particular the child labor laws.
After studying Sociology, Hine began a career in teaching in New York . It was here that photography began to play a major role in his life and work after taking his classes to Ellis island to take photos and document the thousands of immigrants who were arriving each day. Hine's work took him to, amongst other places, to the steel working districts of Pittsburgh, all over the U.S. documenting child labour and to Europe during and after WWI documenting the work being done by the American Red Cross.
Hine to me is inspiring because his work was done for a purpose and succeeded in itself and although not for the same purpose as my own, the level of dedication he had is inspiring. For instance when he was suspended 1000 feet above 5th Avenue in order to document the work of the men constructing the Empire State Building in photos such as these:

"I wanted to show the thing that had to be corrected: I wanted to show the things that had to be appreciated." Said Hine and in his photographs he seemed able to capture the effect upon and relation between the people and their environment.

In this photo the boy shines the shoes of a man. The man with his arms folded and with one foot upon the boy's shinebox to me speaks of indifference towards the boys situation, who is on his knees and dressed in rags and seems to be accustomed to it.
In the above photo you see a long line of machinery at which there is a young girl working. I like the contrast in the photo between the solid, steel machine and the small girl.
The images of child labor portray situations which most would call wrong and injust which was exactly the point of the photographs; to expose a system that was immoral and was let alone on the basis that few had real insight into what was going on.

Abstract Images

This week's task was to shoot 8 abstract photos, 4 in color and 4 in black and white.

Photo manipulation - Fantasy landscape.

So this is the image I manipulated. I took pieces from 5 different photos to make it. I don't think it is what you'd call a landscape in actual fact.
To make this I used the magnetic lasoo tool, the clone stamp, the blurrer and the cropping tool. The conga line was made up of one lady who I cloned and then replaced her head.

Some photos taken at a supermarket and Camden market

Here are a few photos taken over the past couple of weeks:

-This one is a little dark, I think this is due to using an exposure setting which was too low.

This one is blurred which I put down to camera shake, a tripod might be the solution.

Again this one seems a little dark to me. I used the lady in the foreground for the photo manipulation task.
So that's the supermarket.

I think this one would be better if the doorway were more central in the photo.

I am happy with some of the photos but overall I think that I need to spend alot more time practicing and developing technique.

The theme of my subject

So, after much deliberation and brainstorming I have chose my theme. My subject will be people and the theme will be 'commerce' or more 'shopping'.
I have chosen this subject because I think it will produce some interesting shots and hopefully I'll be able to show that there is a strong connection between the theme and the subject. There also seems to be a strong presence of shops, garages, markets etc. most places we go so if I keep my camera with me whenever possible then I should be able to get a good variety of shots.
I don't yet know if certain shops will allow me to take photos on their premises, I shall have to chance an arm though I will no doubt steer clear of lingerie sections.
I have not yet looked into it but I will also try and research photos which share the same theme as mine and draw inspiration if possible.

This weeks task - Shutter speed

So the focus of this week is shutter speed. A slow shutter speed blurs objects in motion and a fast shutter speed makes moving objects look still and shows more detail.

Here are a couple of photos I've taken using a slow shutter speed

Aperture Task

These are a few photos taken for the aperture task. The camera was set to aperture priority and the aim was to take photos with a varied aperture. All of the photos were taken with an ISO of 400.

A 7.1

A 9.0

A 9.0

A 5.0

Most of the photos taken have a low aperture so I'll continue this task through the week and hopefully get more variation.
